Take a moment to complete the following survey for Ohio Legal Rights Service
Has your child been restrained or secluded in school?
Legal Rights Service (LRS) is conducting a survey on the use of restraint and seclusion in Ohio's schools or other education settings. LRS will use information from the surveys to learn about the experiences of students with disabilities across Ohio and to advocate for their education rights and personal safety. Unlike in hospitals and other facilities that receive federal funding, there are no federal laws that address how and when restraint or seclusion can be used in schools. It is also impossible to determine the full extent to which these interventions are used because there is currently no consistent reporting of data. The Ohio Department of Education (ODE) has no rules protecting children from restraint or seclusion in elementary, middle or high schools. In contrast, ODE's Behavior management/discipline rule for preschool programs (see http://codes.ohio.gov/oac/3301-37-10) prohibits physical restraints used to confine a child by any means other than holding a child for a short period of time, such as in a protective hug, so the child may regain control. The preschool rule states that no child shall be placed in a locked room or confined in an enclosed area such as a closet, a box or a similar cubicle. If your child has experienced restraint or seclusion in a classroom, on a school bus, or in another education setting, please take the Restraint and Seclusion survey: https://www.surveymonkey.com/s/CHSJVRQ

Study Provides New Insights into the Implications of Autism Onset
Patterns
Kennedy Krieger Institute recently announced new study results showing
that when and how autism symptoms appear in the first three years of
life has vital implications to a child's developmental,
diagnostic and educational outcomes. Published in the April "Journal of
Autism and Developmental Disorders," this study found children with
early developmental warning signs may actually be at lower risk for
poor outcomes than children with less delayed early development who
experience a loss or plateau in skills. Read more:

Special diet offers no benefits for autistic children
A small study found that eliminating gluten and casein from the diet of children with autism does not appear to help improve the symptoms of the condition. Early-childhood education programs, however, seemed to help with the symptoms, the researchers said. http://healthday.com/Article.asp?AID=639268

Ohio gets more support from districts on second-round grant bid
Ohio received slightly more support from school districts for its second-round bid for federal Race to the Top grants than it had garnered for its first application. State education officials lobbied school districts to support their efforts and required districts to obtain buy-in from their superintendent, school board president and teachers-union representative in order to participate. "We chose to require all three signatures because it is going to take the effort of all three groups to make sure the initiatives are implemented," a state education official said. http://www.dispatchpolitics.com/live/content/local_news/stories/2010/05/15/copy/more-schools-entering-race-to-the-top-for-funds.html?adsec=politics&sid=101

Research: Shadows may be more distracting for children with autism
Children with autism appear to see shadows differently than others and that can interfere with the way they recognize objects, a study found. Researchers said the study adds to information about the sensory abnormalities that are a part, and possibly a cause, of autism. The study's findings also suggest that children who have autism should possibly be taught in classrooms with multiple light sources that reduce distractions that could be caused by shadows, one researcher said. http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/37259407/ns/health-kids_and_parenting/
