Education - National Survey on IDEA released

idesimage1The National Center for Learning Disabilities (NCLD), National Down Syndrome Society (NDSS), Autism Society of America (ASA), Autism National Committee (AutCom), and The Advocacy Institute (AI) are sponsoring a survey of whether the rights of students with disabilities and their parents are protected. The survey topics include whether the rights of students with disabilities and their parents are protected throughout the special education process, including IEP meetings and IEP issues, eligibility (child find), Due Process hearings (impartial hearings), and other education issues. There is also a questionnaire for parents whose children have been denied eligibility for IDEA (denied an IEP). They are studying these issues for all students, regardless of their disability or special need. There are surveys for all community members: parents of children with disabilities; self-advocates (people with disabilities); and attorneys, advocates, and other professionals. The survey will run March-May 2011. The results will be compiled into a report about experiences under the IDEA that will be published this summer. Learn more and take the survey at: http://www.ideasurvey.org

Gahanna Lincoln High School DECCA chapter makes it to Nationals!
gahannaCongratulations to seniors Gloria MacLean and Victoria Allen from Gahanna Lincoln High DECCA. They were selected to move on to the DECCA national conference in Orlando. They choose the Autism Society of Ohio as their charity to compete in the Creative Marketing event at the State competition of DECCA chapters from all over Ohio.   After much research they came up with a marketing strategy and presentation.  As part of their project they planned and promoted The Autism Puzzle Basketball Shootout with the entire DECCA class.  By using marketing and management skills learned this year they implemented a promotion plan that created tremendous buzz for the Autism Society of Ohio among Gahanna students, staff, and community members. Three corporate sponsors donated raffle prizes for their event, and creative promotion ideas helped them raise a total of $1,247 for the Autism Society of Ohio.  Thanks and good luck at Nationals!
