CMS Approves Individual Options Waiver Amendment 
medicaidOn May 6, DODD received notification that the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) has approved the most recent amendment to the DODD-operated Individual Options (IO) waiver. In accordance with the approved amendment, the following changes will be in effect as of July 15, 2011:

Freedom of Choice Form -County Boards of DD no longer will be required to send the Freedom of Choice form (indicating that an individual wishes to be on a waiver instead of residing in an institution) to DODD's Medicaid Waiver Unit as part of the Initial and Re-Determination Waiver Packets. County Boards must continue to maintain copies of the signed Freedom of Choice form in the individual's file at the local level, however.

New version of psychiatric manual released, open for public comment 
articlesThe latest version of an updated manual used to diagnose psychiatric conditions was releasedTuesday and the public is being invited to comment through June 15. The changes will include a new framework that draws connections between previously unassociated disorders to prompt new research, as well as including Asperger's syndrome as part of the broader autism spectrum disorders. After field trials, the manual is expected to be released in 2012.

DODD Proposing New Rule for Homemaker/Personal Care (HPC)

Pre-Existing Condition Insurance Plan (PCIP) now available
informationThe Pre-Existing Condition Insurance Plan (PCIP) was established by the Affordable Care Act.   The PCIP is administered by either your state or the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services and provides a health coverage option for children and adults in all 50 states and the District of Columbia who have been locked out of the health insurance market because of a pre-existing condition. Studies link autism to fever, diabetes and obesity during pregnancy 
Studies presented at the International Meeting for Autism Research found an increased risk of autism in children of women who had pre-pregnancy obesity or who suffered from diabetes or a simple fever during pregnancy. In one of the studies, researchers reported a 60% higher autism risk in children born to mothers with chronic hypertension, pre-pregnancy obesity or type 2 or gestational diabetes. Unrelated clinical data found the mothers of children diagnosed with an autism spectrum disorder were about twice as likely to report having a fever during pregnancy than the mothers of children without autism.  Click here to read more...

 

 

Study examines bullying risk for children with autism 
Data on 68 adolescent boys ages 12 to 18 suggest that those with autism were more likely to be victims of physical aggression, name-calling and other forms of bullying than their peers. The study, which will be presented at the International Meeting for Autism Research in San Diego, linked bullying risk to the boys' ability to control stress and emotional responses.  Click here to read more...

Conception during winter raises autism risk, study finds 
Children who were conceived in the months of December to March were more likely to be diagnosed with autism compared with those conceived in other months, according to a study in the journal Epidemiology. Researchers said seasonal viruses, diet changes and other environmental factors may contribute to the increased risk but more research is needed.  Click here to read more...

 

Colleges provide more services for students with Asperger's syndrome 
Students who were among the first generation to be diagnosed with Asperger's syndrome as children are now prompting colleges and universities to develop services to meet their needs. Universities have created peer-mentoring programs to help students with Asperger's plan and navigate schedules, time-management coaching, single dorm rooms and other services. "We've got to think -- in higher education and in the broader society -- about the next step," said John Bennett, a Temple University official. "It doesn't end here. Antibiotic shows promise as treatment for intellectual disabilities 
The antibiotic Minocycline is among a number ofmedications showing promise as treatments for fragile X syndrome, autism and other developmental disorders. It may be several years before large-scale trials are complete, but the medications have led to improvements for 14-year-old Chase Brown, who has fragile X, and is among 50 children and adults taking Minocycline as an experimental treatment

Research finds children with autism have larger brains 
Researchers, using magnetic resonance imaging, found that children ages 18 to 35 months with autism spectrum disorders had larger total brain volume at ages 2 to 4 and greater brain surface area by age 4 compared with those without autism, although the cortical thickness for both groups was the same at age 4. The study in the Archives of General Psychiatry suggests that the brain overgrowth may have started before age 1 or 2, the lead researcher said.

Autism screening at very young age may lead to inaccurate diagnosis 
A study of babies born before 28 weeks of gestation found that 18% of 152 toddlers tested had positive diagnosis in three screenings for autism spectrum disorders at 18 months old, but only 10% of 116 toddlers did at 30 months old.
