News From ASO:

April is Autism Awareness Month!

Help raise awareness of autism in Ohio!  The Autism Society, the nation’s leading grassroots autism organization and the Autism Society Chapters in Ohio, are launching several family-friendly awareness activities to give people with autism and their communities a chance to celebrate National Autism Awareness Month in their unique ways this April.

Put on the Puzzle!

The Autism Awareness Puzzle Ribbon is the most recognized symbol of the autism community in the world. Autism prevalence is now one in every 110 children in America - that’s 13 million families and growing who live with autism today. Show your support for people with autism by wearing the Autism Awareness Puzzle Ribbon this month – as a pin on your shirt, a magnet on your car, a badge on your blog, or even your Facebook profile picture - and educate folks on the potential of people with autism! For suggestions and resources, visit www.autism-society.org/ribbon.

Spread the word!

Helping the autism community can be as easy as updating your Facebook or Twitter status! On April 1, the Autism Society is asking supporters to change their status on Facebook and/or Twitter to “Autism affects 1 in 110. Text “AUTISM” to 50555 to donate $10 to the Autism Society. Help spread the word: http://bit.ly/bUAVRf .” For the first time ever, supporters can now simply text “AUTISM” to 50555 to donate $10 to the Autism Society. 100% of your donations will go to support the Autism Society’s mission of improving the lives of all affected by autism.

Put more on your plate!

When it is time to renew your license plate, purchase an Autism Awareness license plate.  Not only does this license plate raise awareness of autism, it also helps raise funds for the programs and services of the Autism Society of Ohio.  All of the funds raised stay right here in Ohio – last year monies raised help fund the printing and distribution of the Ohio Parent’s Guide to Autism Spectrum Disorders, trainings in different parts of the state, advocacy efforts and the OCALI Conference.  And you can order online!  For more information, visit www.autismohio.org.

Make a difference!

There are several important bills moving through Congress that will have important effects on the autism community – safer educational settings (Keeping All Students Safe Act), better autism services (Autism Treatment Acceleration Act), greater financial independence (Achieving a Better Life Experience Act), better protection against toxic chemicals (Toxic Substances Control Act Reform), and more. For more information about this legislation and to take action to support it, visit www.vote4autism.org.   Additionally, you can be a part of “improving the lives of all affected by autism” right here in Ohio by advocating with the Ohio General Assembly on autism issues affecting Ohioans – visit the Autism Society of Ohio website at www.autismohio.org and joint the Ohio Autism Advocacy Network.

Connect with your neighborhood!

The Autism Society and inflatable playground franchise Pump It Up are bouncing again with “Bounce for Autism” – over 100 community-based fundraising events that combine family fun with raising awareness and support for autism in locations nationwide that welcome children on the autism spectrum. The Autism Society of Central Ohio is hosting a Bounce for Autism in Columbus on April 22, 2010 at the Pump It Up location at 8200 Business Way, Suite F in Plain City, Ohio from 6-8pm.  For more information, contact Kathi Machle at 614-873-7271 or This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it '; document.write( '' ); document.write( addy_text53460 ); document.write( '<\/a>' ); //--> This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it .  To register online visit www.bounceforautism.org and click on “Register” and search for Ohio.  There also lots of autism awareness activities going on around Ohio.  Visit www.autismohio.org and click on LOCAL CHAPTERS to find an activity in your area.  But if you can’t find an event that suits you just right, create your own! 1Power4Autism is an online tool that makes it easy to mobilize friends and family and help make a difference.  Visit 1Power4Autism at www.1power4autism.org

Watch a movie!

Did you know that something that seems as simple as going to the movies is not an option for many families affected by autism? The Autism Society is working with AMC entertainment to bring special-needs families “Sensory Friendly Films” every month. The movie auditoriums have their lights brought up and the sound turned down, families are able to bring in their own gluten-free, casein-free snacks, and no previews or advertisements will be shown before the movie. Additionally, audience members are welcome to get up and dance, walk, shout or sing.  The special showing of How to Train Your Dragon was April 10. Up next is Shrek 4 on May 22, 2010.  Sensory Friendly Films are shown in Ohio at:

AMC Ridge Park Square 8, 4788 Ridge Rd., Brooklyn, Ohio, 44144

AMC Lennox 24, 777 Kinnear Rd, Columbus, Ohio, 43212

AMC Newport on the Levee 20 (Cincinnati area), One Levee Way Ste 4100, Newport, Kentucky, 41071

For more information visit: www.autism-society.org/sensoryfilms

Or, you could see a movie about autism itself - the Autism Society is partnering with the Independent Television Service (ITVS) to support 70 community screenings of the new movie The Horse Boy, based on the memoir of the same name. In the film, Rupert Isaacson shares the inspiring story of how he and his wife learned to think of their son’s autism as an adventure rather than a curse, a beginning rather than an end. It will be shown in Columbus on Tuesday, April 27, 2010 at 7:00 PM at The Glenmont Facility, 470 Glenmont Ave., 43214.  For more information, visit:

The Ohio Department of Developmental Disabilities Invites You to Nominate Your Agency to Participate in the: Employment First Initiative

The Ohio Department of Developmental Disabilities’ Future’s Committee recommended increasing meaningful employment opportunities for people with disabilities be a statewide priority. The Employment First Initiative will provide 6 interested service providers, county boards or private, the opportunity to work with two national consultants on identifying and assisting individuals who are interested in transitioning to community employment.

Which Agencies Are Eligible to Participate?

Agencies providing services to individuals with disabilities in sheltered work settings whose leaders agree to the 5 criteria stated on the attached flyer and commit to transitioning a minimum of 5 people from their sheltered programs to community jobs are eligible to participate.

What Does the Training and Technical Assistance Entail?

Initially, three days of training will be offered at the 6 agency’s locations by Wilson Resources. The first 2 days will be onsite classroom training for identified staff (staff can be from supported employment division, sheltered work or any other agency program) focused on the value of work, assisting people with the most significant disabilities to choose a job that is well-matched to their interests and abilities, developing an Employment Profile that assists the job seeker and those who work with him/her to identify interests, abilities and job ideas, working with families, and learning how to “Work with Business” to open job opportunities.  Attendees will receive a certificate of completion and CEUs from the Ohio Department of Developmental Disabilities.

The third day will be dedicated to participants meeting with job seekers they have identified to transition to a community job, developing individualized employment profiles and identifying many, many creative job ideas. The trainees and the job seekers they are working with will return to the training room and present the job ideas they brainstormed.  Each of the transition teams will have assignments they will work on, including job development, between trainings.

After a period of 60-90 days, the WRI trainer will return to the agency to follow-up with each job seeker and his/her team.  During this period, it will be determined where the job seeker is in finding a job and the problems/issues that have arisen since the training. The WRI trainer will assist each job seeker and his/her team to overcome obstacles and assist the job seeker to transition to community employment.

Wilson Resources will also assist the participating service providers in developing Business Advisory Committees with representatives from the local employer community and provide customized assistance.

Sunday, May 16, 2010-RUN FOR AUTISM Cleveland Marathon, Half Marathon or 10K

The RUN FOR AUTISM serves as OAR’s signature fundraising program.  Eighty-five cents of every dollar raised through the RUN FOR AUTISM supports practical research that examines the issues and challenges that individuals with autism and their families face every day.  As a charity partner of numerous races across the country, the 2009 RUN FOR AUTISM featured 750 participants in various races who raised $540,000 for autism research.

Currently, we are building our team for the Cleveland Marathon, Half Marathon and 10K on May 16th, 2010.  As an active chapter of the Autism Society of America, I would like to invite your members to participate with OAR in this fun and rewarding event.  With three races of varying length to choose from and beautiful views of downtown Cleveland, the race is enjoyable for people of all ages and athletic abilities - runners and walkers alike.

If anyone in your chapter is interested in finding a unique way to support autism-related causes, we would love to have them as a member of the team!  We happily offer fundraising assistance, training advice, customized running gear, pre-race support, and a finish line celebration with friends and family to congratulate the participants. I would be glad to send you more information about the RUN FOR AUTISM and OAR.  If you are interested in receiving materials, please email me at This e-mail address is being protected from spambots.
