Has your child been restrained or secluded in school?
Take LRS' survey on the use of restraint and seclusion in Ohio's schools. Your experiences will help us understand the extent of the problem in Ohio and advocate for the education rights and personal safety of students with disabilities.

Federal Updates/Alerts
Medicaid
from the Disability Policy Collaboration
The "tax extenders" bill is the likely vehicle for an extension of the increased Medicaid federal medical assistance percentage (FMAP) provision. The FMAP increase, enacted in the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act (ARRA), has become extremely important to many states caught in the economic crisis and is scheduled to expire on December 31. Both the House and the Senate have passed a 6-month extension to the FMAP increase, but the bills to which the Medicaid provision was attached have not been reconciled for final passage. In the meantime, advocates at the state level are increasingly concerned about the need for an FAMP extension so that states do not begin to cut services even more than they have so far. The Senate is preparing to work on a tax extenders bill when it completes work on the financial regulatory reform bill. The tax extenders bill is expected to include: a package of tax breaks important to businesses and individuals, unemployment benefits, aid to states, and other provisions.

High unemployment rates are harming job prospects for many students with special needs, causing concern among special-education teachers that students may give up looking for work that could help them live independently and enrich their lives. Educators say students should take advantage of partnerships between schools and employers to help them secure positions. "Kids who have found something they're good at, their self-esteem improves, their whole being improves," one special-education teacher said.

Book: Mockingbird
In Caitlin’s world, everything is black or white. Things are good or bad. Anything in between is confusing. That’s the stuff Caitlin’s older brother, Devon, has always explained. But now Devon’s dead and Dad is no help at all. Caitlin wants to get over it, but as an eleven-year-old girl with Asperger’s, she doesn’t know how. When she reads the definition of closure, she realizes that is what she needs. In her search for it, Caitlin discovers that not everything is black and white—the world is full of colors—messy and beautiful. http://search.barnesandnoble.com/Mockingbird/Kathryn-Erskine/e/9780399252648/?itm=3&USRI=mockingbird
