Participant Criteria: One parent or legal guardian of individual diagnosed with autism, Asperger syndrome, or Pervasive Developmental Disorder – Non-specified AND one adolescent (age 11-18) neuro-typical sibling
Description of Study: This is an exploratory study that aims: 1) to characterize adolescent siblings of individuals with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) by describing socio-demographic data, coping strategies, relationship networks, psychological well-being, and life orientation; 2) determine associations among variables of stress, resources, and Sense of Coherence using a health promotion model.The study requires that one adolescent sibling and one parent/legal guardian give written consent and complete questionnaires. There are two parent questionnaires and four adolescent self-report surveys to be completed by the adolescent brother/sister. The questionnaires can be completed in person, mailed or by telephone. It will take approximately one hour for both persons to complete the study. A gift card in the amount of $20.00 will be given to each sibling when the questionnaires are returned to the researcher.
